O nas

The National Maritime Museum is located on both sides of the Motława, in the very heart of Gdansk's port complex. The Museum is a multi-faceted cultural institution with over one thousand items on display.
Our museum is located on both sides of the Motława, in the very heart of Gdansk's port complex. Welcome!

The main museum building is in three granaries on the Ołowanka Island in Gdansk. From the terminal just under the wooden crane, every 15 minutes there is a ferry taking visiters across to the museum. Otherwise, the museum is accessible from the old town by taking Szarafnia Street along the Marina wharf. The street is also accessible by car.

The National Maritime Museum of Gdansk is a multi-faceted cultural institution with over one thousand items on display, for example typical cargo items of a middle-ages merchant ship as well as artillery from the Swedish battleship 'Solen'. The main exhibition 'Poles on the Seven Seas' presents the maritime history of Poland over the last thousand years in the form of model ships, old weapons, navigational instruments, coins, and ancient ceramics.

The maritime gallery contains a rich collection of ocean art. This is a collection which has received critical acclaim throughout the 43 year exisence of the museum. Among the works are:

Interwar Polish painting

Polish painting from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century

Old masters

European painting from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century

Portraits of Captains

It is our great pleasure to announce that we have finished work on the modernisation of the exhibition entitled 'Poles and the Sea 1918-1945' within the permanent collection called 'Poles on the Seven Seas'. The exhibition is under the patronage of The Senate Marshal of the Polish Repuplic Bogdan Borusewicz.

The collection looks at the maritime history of Poland through the times of the second republic in terms of: politics, maritime economy, fleet technology, the navy, training, water sports.

This exhibition represents an opportunity to learn about: the Polish navy's struggle to win independence 1918-1920, problems facing Poland after gaining access to the sea, facts pertaining to the Polish navy and the creation of the Free City of Gdansk. The numerous documents and photographs take us through the economic policies of the second republic, the building of the port and the city of Gdynia, the development of fishing, particularly long-range fishing, as well as the history of water-sports in the Free City of Gdansk. Furthermore, the collection provides a valuable insight into the Maritime and Colonial League, voyages across the Atlantic, maritime research and training, the shipbuilding industry, as well as the Military and Merchant Navy.

The experience is further enhanced by the possibility of listening to Felix Nowiwiejski's 'Captain's Tango' and the 'Baltic Anthem' as well as watching a film about the Polish Military Navy and the interwar fishing industry.

The museum offers a wide range of educational programmes for primary and secondary pupils. For further information, please contact:
